625.54 says all receptacles for Electric Vehicle chargers require GFI protection.

I am getting contractors and homeowners not wanting to GFI because the charger manufacturer says that they are GFI protected within and they are getting nuisance tripping with double GFI.

Reading on internet I see that a lot of areas are not enforcing GFI protection.

    Thought's

    Hello Steve

I'm sorry you are experiencing home owner kickback but there are a lot of things people don't like regarding the code.  We hear it almost every day but it is our job to enforce the code and we as inspectors can be held negligent if we fail to enforce it.  Here is what the code says:

    625.54 Ground-Fault Circuit-Interrupter Protection for Personnel.

All receptacles installed for the connection of electric vehicle charging shall have ground-fault circuit-interrupter protection for personnel.

    Enhanced Content

Portable and fastened-in-place EVSE and WPTE that are permitted to be cord-and plug-connected must be supplied through a GFCI-protected receptacle. This includes all the single- and three-phase receptacle configurations specified in 625.44(A) and (B) . The outlet supplying direct-connected EVSE is not required to be GFCI protected, unless specified in the manufacturer’s instructions.

The enhanced content from NFPA states that an option is to direct connect the Charging Station if the listing of the charging station allows it to be direct connected and not to be GFCI protected, but any receptacle connection does require GFCI protection. In our municipality we always require GFCI protection for any receptacle connected Charging Station.

    I hope this helps.

    Tony,

    Thanks,

You responded and replied EXACTLY like I knew you would. That is what I have been doing. I wanted to hear from the people that say it is OK to change what the code says and hear their reasons.
